Neil Gaiman on YouTube

Before and after gaining his status as a literary rock star, Neil Gaiman used his pen to address issues of race, gender, and homosexuality. The first story I ever read of Mr. Gaiman’s was the Sandman storyline A Game of You. In that storyline, one his most prominent characters was a transgendered woman named Wanda. One of the things I remember is how little Wanda did not surprise me, how ordinary she seemed, and how affronted I was by her family’s insistence that she be who they wanted her to be rather than herself. A Game of You instantly made me a fan of Neil Gaiman’s.

Like all fans of prominent authors I once wondered, where did Neil Gaiman get his ideas from?  In the following YouTube video, taken at the Wheeler Centre in 2011, he will humorously explain just that. Be warned, if you don’t like his answer I honestly can’t help you because, as an author myself these days, I know it’s the truth.
